It's never a good sign for a program when the athletic director feels the need to give his coach a vote of confidence with two games left to play in the regular season.
The Cardinals have lost three in a row entering the weekend, and the dreams of a Big East title that were present in October have faded to the reality that even a bowl game is unlikely at this point. The crowd for last week's loss to Cincinnati was the lowest of the season, and most of the fans who did brave the rainy weather weren't very happy with the team's performance.
The defeat left Louisville Football at 5-5. It's an underdog this week in its home finale against West Virginia, and won't be favored in its season-ending trip to Rutgers.

Fri, 14 Nov 2008 21:40:09 PST-Seconds after the gun sounded to end No. 22 Cincinnati's soggy 28-20 win over Louisville Football on Friday, several Bearcats sprinted to the end zone and grabbed the Keg of Nails, the trophy that had tormented them for years. This was one keg party coach Brian Kelly had no plans of interrupting. Besides, for the surging Bearcats the good times might just be starting.

"I think we can all say the rivalry is back," Kelly said. "There was a lot of emotion out on the field in this game.
Wed, 19 Nov 2008 06:16:02 GMT-This weekend is shaping up as a huge recruiting deal for the future of the Louisville Football football program. While the Cardinals are expected to host at least eight prospects on official visits this weekend, the contingent has a strong Georgia flavor.

SCOUTING THE OFFENSE: Louisville Football averages just 200 yards a game passing, good for 70th among Division I teams. But before placing all the blame on Hunter Cantwell, look at the receivers. The Cardinals drop a tremendous number of passes, more than 40 through 10 games by one unofficial count, and better hands could lead to better results against WVU.
SCOUTING THE DEFENSE: The Cardinals defense is better than it was a year ago, and the Mountaineers' Pat White hasn't been as good.

THIS WEEK'S GAME: West Virginia at Louisville, Nov. 21 -- It's a "black out" in Louisville, with the school asking its fans to dress like the night for the home finale. One thing is certain; if Pat White gets the third win in his four collegiate games against the Cardinals this weekend, Louisville Football can pretty much turn out the lights on playing in a bowl game.
